Graphic Novels: Okay or Not?

The answer is…yes!

Many parents of students that I teach are concerned when their kids are reading graphic novels.  Here’s my opinion:

There are graphic novels at all reading levels, for children to adults. If your child is a strong reader and they’re interested in a series, make sure the content is appropriate and the vocabulary not too easy and not to hard and let them read it.

But in my classroom, I find that graphic novels are the best for kids who have trouble reading or getting interested in reading but they are ready for more complex storyline and content. That’s where graphic novels work great. Often times, the plot is more advanced, but the vocabulary is more basic so a struggling reader can get great practice and at the same time improve both their skills and it will raise their self-esteem.  And the pictures help understand the story as well.

For more information about graphic novels, I found a great article about them on School Library Journal’s website, and you can also peruse the website, Graphic Novel Reporter for more help as well.

Here are a few examples of graphic novels that have been popular in my classroom. I am no expert on graphic novels, so if your child is reading one they love, please, let us know at The K5 and we will post a list.

I am enjoying these graphic novels by Graphic Spin. They are based on classic fairy tales. I actually read them to my 5 year olds and we enjoy the information given at the back of the books. Each comes with a history of the fairy tale and questions to think about. There are also writing prompts that I might ask the kids to draw a picture based on.
