The Local Gem: The Forgotten Public Library
With the advent of the internet, many people see no reason to go to the library thinking they can find out anything on-line. Wrong! Libraries are still fabulous local resources, and more importantly, a great place to take your kid.
I still check books out from my local library branch. It saves me bundles of cash and I find the collection to be very complete. So bring your child down to your local branch and get them a card. It can teach them a number of important things:
- How to share and use a local resource (in this case, books) with their local community.
- To be responsible and be sure to know when the due date is or to renew the book for more time.
- How to use the library as a resource to find information that they need that might not be on the internet (for example, information that is accurate, old, or hidden within texts).
- A great place to go to read quietly and do homework.
There are also numerous free events for kids at public libraries, and some great event s for adults as well.
Where is your local library? Go to www.PublicLibraries.com to find out.
